Description
Syria and Saudi Arabia have made clear efforts to improve relations, which have been seriously strained and nearly severed since 2005 following the assassination of Lebanese former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Syria has repeatedly denied charges of involvement in the assassination, but differences over Iraq, the Palestinians, and Lebanon, kept the two countries at odds. Recent moves to renew Saudi-Syrian dialogue are expected to have a positive impact on Lebanon and may help Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri, son and political heir of Rafik al-Hariri, hammer out a long-delayed government. Hariri is still trying to form a national unity government over three months after the March 14 alliance that he leads won the majority in parliamentary elections on June 7. Saudi King Abdullah arrived in Damascus on Oct. 7 on a landmark visit to seal reconciliation with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The visit came almost three weeks after Assad arrived on a surprise visit to Jeddah for the inauguration of King Abdullah's University of Sciences and Technology, speeding up the rapprochement process first initiated by the Saudi King last January. Riyadh is seeking dialogue with Syria for several objectives, notably to help pave the ground for the restoration of close and stable Syrian-Lebanese relations based on mutual respect of sovereignty and independence, Beirut daily AN NAHAR columnist Abdel Karim Abul Nasser said on Sept. 25.
